    english and the americans
    Saturday, November 29, 2008 (3:19 PM)

some weeks ago, i was watching greek uncovered - the making of greek tv series. not as in the language of greece but the system of fraternities and sororities. during the interview, a couple of the actresses were asked if they thought franny - an egocentric character - got her comeuppance. interestingly, both of whom have never heard of the word and they were like:

"what? comeuppance? what does that mean? must be a british word."

something to that extent. i was surprised that they've never heard of that word. i kinda suspect it's not exclusively british.

more interestingly, last week during my spanish class, i was asking elena how to say "fishmonger" in spanish and denton, an american classmate, was asking "what? fish?"

    i went, "monger."

and a frown emerged between his brows.

    i repeated, "fishmonger."

    he said, "fishmonger? what's that?"

    i went O_O!

then his wife, a singaporean, who is also in the class asked him, "what do americans call people who sells fish?"

denton went, "er... i don't know. fish... er... salesmen?"

    = =

    zhen is in my dream
    (11:55 AM)

i didn't intend to blog about this but jx told me to write about it. and i just happen to be very obliging. god knows why...

the content is not much but for some weird reasons, his friend whose picture i happen to have seen, appeared in my dream last night. it's not like i've been thinking about her or have thought about her. i've never even seen her in person before but somehow she just appeared. i think i need to put a sign outside my dream gate that reads "no trespassing". but to be honest, i don't really mind her appearing in my dream as long as she's not cast as a reaper, grim or not. i don't fancy waking up with my heart beating faster than 120bpm.

then again, that would've been more of a nightmare than a dream. but yes, it was a good dream that she appeared in though she seemed glum and sorrowful. a girl like her needs to smile. with such a sweet face, it'd be such a pity to see it frown.

are we ready to be colour-blind?
    Saturday, November 22, 2008 (10:17 PM)

the above was the title of an article in the straits times some days ago regarding the US presidential elections. it asked if singaporeans are ready to accept a non-chinese PM. many atimes, we are reminded of our different races by the mass media. each year, after the psle and gce 'o' levels, the mass media tells us who the top chinese, malay and indian students are. why the need to segregate the ranking of the races?

some years ago, i wrote an anti-racism song and i used the term colour-blindness to refer to non-racism. it was not until this particular article which printed a black-and-white image that i realised colour-blindness is not exactly a good representation of non-racism. after all, the black and white are still stark in contrast.

so is it futile to speak of anti-racism?

    no.

analogies are ultimately what they are - analogies. nothing more. colour-blindness is definitely not a good analogy though it is a good play on the language.

the beauty of the kaleidoscope is the coming together of a spectra of colours.

we should acknowledge that we are different because it is our difference that makes this world so beautiful.

the thing to note is, there should not be any stratification even in the mind.

someone responded in the papers saying that we are not ready for a non-chinese PM because aside from race, there is still cultural and religious issue. i don't really get it.

who the fuck chooses a PM based on his religion here?

and if the guy is knowledgeable enough, he should realise that the political system doesn't allow us to choose our PM.

    hydraulics
    (2:46 PM)

was on the 169 bus yesterday carrying a laptop bag, a guitar and another huge bag that contains my guitar cables, effects, adapter, random stationeries and a tuner that has no battery. i just left it there 'cause i have no place to put it and i'm just too lazy to tune each time we jam.

i was also holding aaron's handphone that max and i were watching a funny clip on. but standing in the mildly crowded bus driven by a former sega rally driver, it was difficult to hold my balance. thankfully, a while later the bus decided to pull stunts so that we could watch the video peacefully.

the board above the exit door dropped open before the doors opened and when they did, they forcefully pushed the board all the way down and bent the edge of the huge round mirror at the exit. after a while, a corner of the mirror shattered and the mirror gave way. it fell hard onto the ground and the poor guy sitting next to the door began brushing his hair. apparently some shattered glass or dust got into his mesh of hair.

an auntie sitting right behind max's ass looked back and rubbed salt to wound by saying "wah 还好我们没有坐那里!"

so we finished watching the video and were told to take the next bus. we were given a complementary ticket each and i actually took a picture of it. but i'm lazy to do the transfer to my pc. and i didn't get the pictures of the really bizarre event.

as we got down and i scanned my card, 71 cents was deducted. we alighted and i looked at how far we travelled...

    1 bus stop.

on a more random note, catch the secret life of the american teenager. with her one liners, indifferent face, monotonous voice and a lazy drawl, ashley juergens is damn funny.

    2 laptops and $2
    Wednesday, November 19, 2008 (10:25 PM)

i've been bringing 2 laptops around, one is office laptop and the other is my trusty ol'acer which wasn't very trustworthy in our first month together.

i caught her sleeping with some other laptops.

so now, i've decided to two-time her by bringing a dell around. i met dell at work and realised she was actually my boss' ex. she was then passed on to another female colleague before ending up with me. O_O

acer is kinda big in size. she boasts a vital stats of 14.1. dell is a lot smaller in size. although she doesn't exactly have a good figure at 11.1, it's really easy to bring her out.

i've been using both of them pretty often and i never allow them to go to sleep. other than the times i have lunch. whenever they try to sleep during office hours, i'll wake them up with my finger. i never fail to turn them on with my finger. though they always get turned off at the end of the day.

since i started work, my time on msn has been reduced significantly. probably by over 98%. on some days, i don't even sign in. seems like i'm beginning to lose contact with my friends since my FT work began though it's not even like i talk to everyone everyday on msn.

and the $2? not relevant actually. i'm just pissed my colleague got his car with today's coe bid which ended at $2.

    wtfuck...

    the publishing firm hits back
    Sunday, November 16, 2008 (10:31 AM)

    and fug-king media firm retaliates.

it all started with a particular media company in singapore which i shall not name =). the stats they claim on tv are problematic as they selectively compare certain channels against certain publishing. they flash it on screen so fast, viewers barely have enough time to make sense of it. the only thing that viewers can catch is that the bars of the tv channels are higher than those of the publishings, which i guess is their agenda.

now that the publishing firm has hit back with their own stats that claims a declining viewership on free-to-air tv and an increasing readership of publishings, the media firm has once again tried to interprete the stats in their own way.

    why fight sia...

not as if they offer the same kind of medium although the media firm does have publishings of their own.

    down with monopolization!

    the ac argument
    (10:43 PM)

being rich seems to be the only supporting argument except that it's not a supporting argument at all.

using parents' wealth as an argument even when the premise has no relevance to the claim!?

how is wealth relevant to upbringing?

the only thing they know is that they are rich.

oh i forgot! they know they can sue people too!

that's the only way they can win.

    the new (insert F-word) young
    (12:37 AM)

if you looked at stomp these few days, you might wanna take a look at the one on acjc students tying up their friend to a chin-up pole and tormenting her allegedly on her birthday.

things seem to be getting from bad to worse. from the time we were in secondary school, people began to have the idea that you should get surrounded and pummelled on your back by a group of "friends" a number of times equal to your age. i never understood the significance of it. thankfully, no one ever touched me on my birthday. it appears that these people think it's cool to be doing it. i can't make any sense of it. i find it a work of undeveloped brains. probably no better than the homo erectus.

what exactly was the purpose of the beating? is being different and extreme the idea? if that is it, then it was definitely an attention-seeking act. for how else can one explain the acts of the acjc students.

not only was the idea horrible, it was beyond what i or anyone else could comprehend - to humiliate a friend. any suggestion that the girl was enjoying it simply exemplifies the immaturity. imagine you yourself gets treated like that. if you think you'd enjoy it, well, you're probably in to masochism too.

it's little wonder why the number of teachers are declining. it's no wonder why people quit teaching after the bond ends. with students like these, who needs terrorists? the act of tying up the hands against the poles and trying to tape the mouth didn't look much different from a kidnap. except that it wasn't really a ransom-seeking one.

the horrifying truth is that a staff simply reprimanded the students for messing up the place instead of taking notice of how the girl needs help. or rather, the "friends" need help. they need serious help. they are not taught properly. they need someone to tell them academic excellence does not make one a better person. you need morals, ethics and respect for others.

seriously, the staff needs counselling too. he was either blind or too cowardice to stop the act. or perhaps he wanted to appear as a "cool" person who doesn't mind such acts. but one that condones such acts is nothing more than a dit. he's a staff, i'm sure he has the authority to stop that. at the very least, release the girl.

i'm beginning to see why people preferred to be home-schooled.

the students are bad enough... and the staff are not helping.

to change or not to change
    (10:22 PM)

    the title is boring.

the famous phrase from hamlet has undergone umpteen constructional riffings that it has become dull. too old. but it brings the good 'ol point across.

    A or not A.

    X or not X.

i realised that posting about one's life and adventure is a lot more interesting than silly intellectual opinions about the social order. at least, i enjoy reading about people's lives. we are afterall voyeurs by nature. it's probably a manifestation of insecurity.

i realised i don't like talking too much about my own life. probably 'cause of the insecurity i feel. somehow, i fear someone will use something i posted against me someday in the future. it's like the best policy is to follow good 'ol socrates' footsteps.

    ask. don't say.

i do not like posting my photos either. at the very least, if my future employer tries to google me, she wouldn't happen to know if this is the same person she is looking for and not judge me based on what i write.

at the end of the day, i still hadn't written much about my life. and somehow, i like to keep things private. i'm not made to be famous. but if you'd like to have my signature, i'll be glad to oblige. =)

    frontline
    Tuesday, November 04, 2008 (1:55 PM)

i was watching frontline last friday and happen to be watching the repeat telecast again now. one of the topic was on how the economy is affecting a particular family of 2.

this couple just bought a 4-room flat, a car and hired a maid. the wife is 7 months pregnant and was retrenched a few weeks ago. thus, the husband whose salary is reportedly $2k+, takes home $1k+ after deduction of cpf. $1k+ goes to the car and the wife says they have around $600 left per month. thus, she has been crying every night.

i wonder why they don't want to sell the car...

at the very least, they will still get an extra $1k+ for daily expenses.

    if you were a psychic
    Saturday, November 01, 2008 (1:34 PM)

your good friend (of the same gender) is desperately in need of a heart transplant. your psychic vision tells you s/he has a successful heart transplant.

moments later your psychic vision tells you the heart comes from your good friend's sibling whom you may be linked romantically and will be dying from a freak accident.

    would you tell your friend?

would you try to change the future?

recognising that saving the sibling while finding another heart for your friend is going to deprive the next person of getting a new heart...

recognising that you are playing god...

and what if preventing the death of the sibling causes the deaths of a bus-load of children?

    what would you do?

if you have the chance, catch the dead zone season 2 episode 11. it's good.
