    don't we all love it?

    let's make it regular!

    jPod
    (10:29 AM)

this is a not bad show.

but it's disturbing how it trivialises murder, drugs and terrorist activities.

and how virginity is portrayed as something to be ashamed of.

    excuse me waiter...
    Friday, June 27, 2008 (6:42 PM)

as technology progresses, the job scope of each profession expands and every individual at work is required to do more than what their predecessors used to do.

the ones for the frontline servers at cafes and restaurants (i speak french!) are the most clearly defined. photo-taking.

"excuse me" used to be followed by "can we have the bill please?" or "i would like to order..."

to add on to those options, it can now be followed by "can you take a picture for us?"

say "no thanks" to cheaper digicams.

your profile doesn't fit our requirements
    (2:59 PM)

    this is one big irony.

i went for an interview not too long ago at a financial institution for an editorial position. having no financial background, i knew nuts about unit trusts, bonds, equities and investments. as soon as i arrived, i was given a question requiring a 150-word response from none other than me. the question:

bearing in mind that the global market has been volatile recently, what kind of investments would you suggest to investors looking to invest?

i did the paper. i know i screwed it up.

i also know i screwed up the interview part when i unbelievably honestly said i haven't been reading financial news for 2 months since we cut the straits times subscription in april. i didn't expect to get the job and i really didn't. i don't mind. is there something that disturbs me? yes.

the job requirement and the editors very explicitly state their stand in using plain and simple english and asked what's my writing style. i, very deliberately and frankly, told them that i dislike reading materials that contain so many big words, it cripples my ability to comprehend. it defeats the purpose of writing, which is to convey a message. post-modernist writing sucks. this, i didn't say. but "plain and simple" is a relative concept. it's subjective.

obviously, they appear to be faithful followers of writing in plain and simple english. but the thing that disturbs me is despite their creed, the reply i got was, "your profile does not fit our requirements".

can someone tell me what the fuck is my profile?

please use plain and simple english.
    practice what you preach.

    the return of steph song
    Tuesday, June 24, 2008 (6:46 PM)

would anyone forget her? it appears that she has returned.

not to singapore but to tv.

she disappeared like how many eons ago and it isn't that i'm a fan of hers nor is it that i've been looking for her but through work, i found her in the other part of the world. looks like she has moved to canada and starred in the canadian production jpod.

    when people said she's hot, i couldn't understand how. i still don't.

    so comfortable
    (11:49 AM)

i'm so comfortable with my present life, i dread any change to it. i've never felt so free.

    free of studies
    free of oppression
    free to go anywhere

    anytime

at least under my conscious control. although i'm not free of work, i have the freedom to choose when i want to work. i can work from 10am to 10pm and still enjoy it. i can work from 12pm to 2pm, take a 2 hour break and work from 4pm to 6pm anytime when i feel that it's possible depending on the workload. through these processes, i have been trained to prioritise.

i can choose to hang out with friends anytime. as long as they are free.

i enjoy the freedom to make a decision to visit taipei on spontaneity than through precocious planning. i like the choice to go ktv every week. i don't do that but having the option is good.

    i love my life!

    so far...

    stupid Man
    Monday, June 16, 2008 (12:12 AM)

you get the idea. on the one hand it obfuscates the contribution of the female. on the other, it avoids implicating the female in phrases like this. stupid Man.

Man is one narcissistic race. in life, they kill other species and destroy their habitats for their own benefit and they call it 'the natural selection'. but when harm comes their way, they call it an action capable of a beast. in religion, they make god in their image and claim that god made them in his image. has anyone seen god? in movies, they make aliens in their image and even make them communicate the same way as we do. speak. even more ridiculous is that they made them speak english.

is Man really the smartest race? what makes Man think that the dolphins aren't having a lecture about us under the sea? stupid Man.

    user-friendliness
    Tuesday, June 10, 2008 (10:55 PM)

i recall a conversation with a campmate about the user-friendliness of mobile phones. i was wondering if the LG viewty is user-friendly and this campmate of mine said, "哎呀,没有friendly不friendly的。什么电话习惯了就friendly liao." but user-friendliness is based upon the ease of use at first attempt. not the nth attempt.

to be fair to the machines, when we think of electronics not working the same way they used to, scenes of abuse appear. humans tend to slap the sides of tv, knock the remote controls against their palms, or even tilt and kick the vending machines. those aren't very friendly users, are they?

    talk about user-friendliness...

    the invisible frame
    (5:44 PM)

i was browsing through the assessment books, or rather sample essay books for secondary school at a famous bookstore again.

yes, this isn't the first time that i've been flipping sample essay books.

there really are lots and lots of books on sample essays or what some of the book titles call, "model essays". reading through, i got a little disturbed with the writing, particularly the narrative pieces. i wondered who wrote them.

and if they are highly qualified professionals, why they limit the mental growth of the adolescent.

i felt some sort of disgust at the writing style. it was childish. there are only 2 reasons for this.

    1) whoever wrote them is simply not good enough
    2) whoever wrote them is limiting the abilities of students (we're getting into socialisation again)

either way, there's no reason why the books should be published. if the author is an excellent writer, s/he is most probably too framed into a kind of social belief that secondary school students should write like that and this is not helping. the writing style is too "primary school".

the syllabus appears to be 120-word essays for primary school kids. 350 to 600-word (probably more) essays for secondary school students. but the standard remains. it seems that they are more concerned about the ability to write longer essays than the ability to write good essays. the age-old showdown begins.

    quantity VERSUS quality

do these guys ever stop fighting? if books continue to call those essays "model essays", how can anyone hope to outdo alvin? best writes is not called BEST writes for nothing.

escapism is worse than making the wrong decision?
    Saturday, June 07, 2008 (4:32 PM)

i like this sentence but how true is it?

there's a reason why we hate you
    Wednesday, June 04, 2008 (1:31 PM)

following a generator explosion a few days ago, some domains not affected initially are down today due to relocation of some files. and as soon as the recovery completed, a middle-eastern hacker hacked into the server and left a message there. so proud of him to be a hacker. i wonder...

what's there to be fucking proud of?

    this is...
    Tuesday, June 03, 2008 (2:38 PM)

other than her lack of confidence, which may be the reason for her slight hunchback, i totally love her rendition of this song.

    technically speaking...
    (1:11 PM)

why must everything be so technical?

    ease up dude...
