    media - a learning source
    Thursday, November 17, 2005 (11:07 AM)

people like me, perhaps trust the media too much to realise its misleading aspect in certain areas. and i only realise this because of what i already know, not what i wanted to find out. i'm one who gets easily influenced by the media, in some sense. ask people who has been hanging around me and you will know. don't let me know you watch f.r.i.e.n.d.s or russell peters or i'll go on and on with what i remember from the show. and the thing is, i watch the same episodes so many times, sometimes people don't recall that it happened. until a few months ago, every time i have nothing to do, i'll watch f.r.i.e.n.d.s. despite knowing what will happen, i still find it funny. now that i've formatted my pc, almost all are gone except 2 special episodes. so i turn to russell peters but, i've been saying it so much for the past few weeks, i'm getting a bit sick of it. f.r.i.e.n.d.s is still the best. 10 seasons, over 250 episodes to talk about. although i didn't watch the first 4 seasons, i still have like over 120 episodes unlike russell peters, just one.

oh yah, i got carried away for a moment. i don't really know to what extent is the word 'jap' racist but it seems that the word has been used a lot and heavily emphasized during ww2. many people tell me that it's racist and derogatory and if that's the case, the media should've been more informed of it. a lot of people i know use that word not knowing it's racist. c'mon, it's human nature to cut short everything we say. since that word constitutes the first syllable in "japanese", we use it unwittingly. if you have today's edition of the straits' times (17 nov 2005), you would be able to see the 'urban' section's cover page. on the bottom right corner reads, 'the weirdest jap stuff you'll never use'. this might mislead people into thinking it is ok to use the word 'jap'. i'm not the kind of people who would go around telling people, 'eh don't use that word lah, it's racist'. to be honest, i find people who do that a bit irritating. and surprisingly, i'm doing it now. haha... but no, i'm more concerned about negative media influences. my lecturer said he jumped on someone who called his japanese fren a 'jap'. i'm not really bothered if you use that word in my face but don't let him hear it.

then there's another word which the chinese programs use it frequently in singapore especially during star awards - 给予. how do you read these words? it's not so bad when the artistes read it as gei3 yu3 but the newscasters should've known better than reading it the same way.

changing topic, people have said i look like this person, that person. some say i look like bae yong jun, some say suzuki ichiro, some say inaba koushi, some say their siblings or their cousin. of course i don't know how their siblings or cousin look like but look at this!

where's the resemblance? i don't really see it. none of them even look alike anyway. maybe i'll try not smiling the next time i take a picture.
